What Makes a Good Car Show?

I went to a disappointing car show today. There were some really cool cars, but so few that we saw all we needed to see within two hours. The organizers ordered enough trophies that they could probably give one to every car. My class had 2 cars, and I left before any awards. In contrast, I’ve done two cars n coffees and did nothing but smile the whole time. What makes a car show or meet good?

A destinct lack of Tri-Fives and base model corvettes. I’m a GM guy and they bore the shit out of me.

One key difference between shows and meets are the amount of people who like to drive and talk about their cars, and variety. I feel like most car shows, at least around me, are the same 50's-60's American cars owned by people who care more about “numbers matching” than anything else. Car meets, by contrast, are people who are their to talk about cars more than just stare. And the variety is much better, as people don’t feel compelled to own a concourse level restoration to show off their ride.

Of course there is some mixing and matching of both crowds at shows and meets, but the general variety of both cars and people is just better at meets.

I suppose (this is getting a lot longer than intended, sorry) the basis right in the name. A show is just to show. A meet is for meeting people.

Diversity in everything. Cars and Coffee type meets usually have people from all ages, races, and professions and their cars tend to reflect on that. It isn’t the same 65 year old with his 196x GM/Ford/Mopar painted red with stripes that doesn’t want to associate with the youth.

Variety and how cool the people are. If they’re willing to talk.

Maybe its the “low stakes” of Cars and Coffee that brings out the enthusiast over the “showmanship.” I’ve seen way more “rare” cars at Cars and Coffee than I have ever seen at X show presented by Y owners club.

Because everything else has been said already, I’ll say it’s the lack of organization of C&C. There’s something perversely appealing about having a Ferrari parked next to an Eagle Talon, parked next to a ‘69 Camaro, parked next to an Aircooled Porsche. It also forces people look at cars they wouldn’t otherwise see if it was a single-marque show or one split into categories.

Most proper shows are a little too stuffy and cliquey for me, that’s why I like the impromptu feel of C&Cs.

Hawaiian shirts, a whole row of‘32 Fords painted like Trapper Keepers, stuffed animals, crybaby dolls, terrible music, lawn chairs, sandwich boards with lots of pictures and the story about the owner’s rare 2004 Monte Carlo LS, booths with completely unrelated arts and crafts, poodle skirts, entry fees, a vast cornucopia of “do not touch” signs, over-polished cars, owner’s who don’t want to talk about anything other than their car or an identical car (or won’t talk to you at all), 200 different categories with trophies and judges who will tear your car apart.

FUN! IT’S FUN! SO MUCH FUN!

I can go to cars and coffee on a whim, don’t even have to wash my car, and everyone there just wants to bs about cars. And there are no crybaby dolls.
